Question from a senior sales major at Baylor:

What is appropriate to do on a job interview lunch/dinner with a recruiter involving alcohol?

Say you are there for an office visit and you've been touring the company, meeting people, and doing interviews all day, then they take you to dinner afterward. What do you order to drink? What if the server asks me first and I do want a drink?

I wouldn't order one because that might look bad, but what if the recruiter orders one first? Is it ok then to order one? How do I say, ohh you go ahead and order first. Or should I just order a "water for now"??

If it was lunch I might stick to something soft.  But at dinner I would order a glass of white wine.  Or a white wine spritzer. There is nothing wrong with one glass of white wine with dinner.  I doesn't say anything about you.

if you want to over-think it then perhaps beer makes you look uncultured, champage = ditzy, hard liquor + mixer = a real drinker.  If you say "oh I dont know..what are you having" then perhaps you'll look indecisive and unsure of yourself.

I agree with JDG about lunch. With dinner, I don't see any issue with an "adult beverage." Just be conservative in the process.

A friend of mine who is a cop said it is better to drink gin if your a heavy drinker as Gin is one of the few drinks that does not smell. Suzy is a gin drinker I used to drink gin many many years ago. Have you tried the backwards 3 gin? That is great gin.

Lori try drinking rum  from a liquor store instead of the lcoal market. Step up from  maddog 20/20 LOL

I am glad I have taught you something. Gotta knock down that value  to get a great price people are always willing to compromise three times once they compromise once.

Ron (rjp), did you forget the Vermouth?

Of course, for some people, just opening a bottle of Vermouth in the same room is enough for their dry martinis.

During the short time I was a bartender, I would just put a few drops in a frosty martini stem, swirl it around and pour it out. All the while letting the gin sit in a shaker on ice. Shake that up pretty well (getting it as cold as possible), strain it into the stem and add three olives on a fancy toothpick (a plastic sword always seemed to do the trick). This seemed to satisfy most martini officianados.
