What are some of your tips to get past the gate keeper?

call before 7:00 tp 8am and after 5:15pm -- they are always there - also these contacts are usually extremely busy from 9:30 - 4:00 because after all their job is to run a company....This is there time to be at their desk catch up on voice mails and e-mails.

Once I have the C-Level contact name - This is when  I call to set appointments- I also set my appointments with these people and shoot for the same time frame.

I take it you want what some of us say to get the gate keeper to let us through?

ya...if you have any to share....basics but could be good info...I'm always open to new ideas...I'm pretty good at getting through the gate keeper.  for me, I think part of it is the confidence in your voice when your ask for the owner....because I find sometimes they will just blurt out their boss's cell phone number to me...I thought man that was easy....but maybe it's because I use a consultative approach...I'm there to help them...makes you a consultant not just any sales person calling for the owner.

i love cold calling - but in my new position it's not the most practical tool...When i do however, I make calls to non-corp locations to extract information.    I will usually visit 10-15 of their non decision making locations and extract all kinds of information.   While doing this I also do alot of research on the web, read the companies missions, their financials, D&Bs', jigsaw, etc before I make an initial phone call.....TO be a consultant, you have to know more than your product -----YOU HAVE TO KNOW THEIRS.

When cold calling, if I can't get thru to the person I need, I usually go to another department (or even location) and start asking questions.  Gatekeepers are there for a reason, to keep people like you and me from taking up the time of the person we are trying to see.  By going thru someone else, sometimes I can get enough information that arms me with a better reason for the meeting or even a reference to see the main person.  Sometimes it takes a couple of meetings with the underlings to gain confidence so that I can get to the main person, but persistence always prevails.

Iam, your right.  I found that changing my habits in when I called made a huge difference.  Although every company can be different, the people you need to talk to are usually in early or work late.  Cheers!

When I do have to entertain a gate keeper to get into the decision maker I try to come up with a couple of sentences that explains who I am and what I can do for them.I am here to eliminate _____________ and  provide a long term solution saving you time and effort. If they ask questions I answer them if not we go see the decision maker.Respect is a two way street

I find a long drawn out presentation bores them and they know it wil bore the decision maker who is normally the owner in my profession,

That's what I do kind of rich...I'll sometimes ask the gate keeper questions...prequalifying questions in a sence...I want to get a feel for what they currently are doing with their advertising and their business...almost like prequalifying the client but to the gatekeeper....make them feel involved like part of the crew...have them get involved....building trust with the gatekeeper can win yourself the contact.

In a discussion about this very topic one sale person relayed a technicque he said never failed him. I thought it funny at first almost like a cheap shot over head of the assistant. He fed ex's his main opening statement to the owner ceo .Usually an assistant believes this to be a personal to open and  sends it through to  the decision maker.

After thinking on this for a bit, it may work with a person that is very difficult to reach. Those that work with  the assitants how do you see this apporach working? How do you think it  would helps or hurt the relationship with the assitant?

Rich - I think that is strong....I am going to try that in a few situations I am stuck in...

I don't think that the receptionist would hold a grudge...Her job is to assis the person your calling on so they can run the company profitably and effectively...You are a resource and a toold to make that happen - therefore they all need you...  You'll have plenty of time to make friends with her during while you are waiting to get into his office....

I think it is brilliant and I am going to do it today!  Will keep you posted........

Win,  usually try to find out all I can about the business/company I am trying to get.

Where they buy their current products services, their customers, Owners, ect.

A well informed sales person is a GREAT supplier.

First thing I do out of the chutes is to do a D&B, LTA,and or Credit check. Number 1 test then procede.

Great suggestion.  I do think that the more you research the more you will impress and also have the potential to discover new ways to add value.

Iam...glad to hear the good news...my company had presentations on the end of ball point pens...it was in the cap...you just take of the lid and plug the piece into your computer (so it looks like a pen hooked to the side of you pc)...then the entire mini presentation/commercial rolled out...and you can actually use the pen to write with.  I don't know who makes them....google it...I'm sure you could find out.  keep us posted...that's exciting!
