Do not be seduced by the ether of potential is the moral here.  We are often seduced by the potential that we believe we see in others. We see potential, as well as, in all the opportunities, all around us.  We see potential in people who we have a vested interest.  The seduction sometimes is that we think that if we wait, if we are patient, if we give a new hire some extra time to prove themselves that they can live up to their potential.  This was of think can be counter active.  Ironically, it costs the company money. When this happens, the seduction begins, and then you can end up making decisions from your emotions, feelings and hope.  This seduction clouds better judgement.  Often the people are hired on thier potential rather than on what they have truly and measureable achieved.  The key is investing your time as a hiring manager to make the right person valuable.  Do you think people should be given second chances when they are not achieving the company goals?  Do you or have you seen others living off the potential of fellow employees?  Are you or have you been seduced by the ether of potential?

Lori

This is a good question and one that has many variables. How much time depends on the level of achievement. Strides with learning the system combined with poor closing may require more time to get it however no growth ,limited ability to grasp that learning curve they must go.

A person who is learning a new system is required to forget thier old habits and start inserting new techniques. These people are bound to encoutner failure before they can arrive at success.

Abilities and potential  are discovered within the first 2-3 weeks and that is the tiem for management to arrive at a conclusion to either train more diligently or to let them go.

Potential gets those in the car door but no one rides for free.

I was thinking about hiring and everyone is hired on potential. Potential comes from work history and the accomplishments anyone has made. All decsions to hire are based on potential.

So Rich, how do you know if the success has come from the reps own success or someone elses?  How do you know to trust that gut feeling?  How do you know if I will seduce you into thinking anothers idea was mine?  You would be at a disadvantage wouldn't you.  Much like how, lol, the word seduction got Sell4U so screwed up he was dazed (gee, and I taught him all he knows) hugh.

Lori don't you think you would have to rely on history? How can you possibly know any of that when you are hiring a person and that my friend makes you you  hire on potential. When you hire with gut feelings you are taking a huge chance and it probably pays off far less then using your head and do what you do as a sales manager and  check out the references and resume to make the choice. Now this information gives you a better gut feeling of your choice doesn't itUsing baseball I have a person who has played 15 years and is batting 270 and I have a new player who is batting 260 that plays the same position. I must look at potential and make the bold statement that the new guy hitting 260 has a far greater potential to hit better than the guy who is batting 270 after 15 years of history. Baseball and business follows the same rules.
