Hi

This is my first ever post in this forum! Hope you will all be gentle with me!

I own a salon and hence I'm a hair technician turned sales person!

Has anyone got any advice for how I can cross and up sell products to be clients without it just sounding obvious that I'm after their money!

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks again

jenny

First and foremost you need to know the product you are selling. There's nothing worse then having someone try to sell you something when they don't know anything about the product they are selling. Try the products yourself so you are aware how they work. (ex. if you use too much it will make your hair greasy). Ask questions and find out what your clients problems. Also ask what they are using on their hair currently. I do not sell products that I don't think work well. I will tell a customer if I think a product isn't worth buying. They appreciate your honesty. I worked in a retail salon for 4 years, that's why I'm telling you these things. They have worked for me.

Jenny  ask your clients what they are presently using and why they like the rpoduct they now use. Compare the products and explain how your product will do a better job allowing them to manage their  hair better.

Jenny, you know everyone tells their hairdressor everything. lol  So here goes....

(Your washing the clients hair)... and you say to the customer while sudzing the lid,  "I love the smell of this shampoo I use, it has such a  wonderful smell and does a great job cleanising the scalp" and Mary would say (because you have her in your clutches with the great head massage you do) ahhhhhhh yah, it feels great when you wash my hair.  Then when you sit her up and put the towel on, take a second to reset the shampoo on the sink side again and she will probably ask you what it is.

Second, balm for straightening is a big seller,  you must as you doing the straightening say a similar thing and keep the bottle on the ledge in front of the customer to instill the name.  Hey, I always get the hint and buy because I have been shown a great product as well as had a chance to sample it as well.

Do you have samples you can give your clients?

That is just one way I thought would be good for you to think about.

Everyone I know thinks the best part of the hair visit is the shampoo and conditioner.  The massage of the hair should never be short because of time, it is the esscence of your sale.

wxactly right.

this girl has such a unique opportunity to not only be talking to the client but  she had her hands on them as well... wow! (some customers i'd have liked to have my hands on... around their necks haha)

You have from the time the customer walks in the door to the time they walk out to build you sale.

, there coming in looking frumpy and leaving looking hot and...more than likely, they are wanting to try a new shampoo. no one is selling shampoo at walmart... just read what they say and pluck it off the shelf... the only reason there buying it anyway is because they see the ad's. so, likely, if you do it right, you will be the first person actually explain the benefits as a professional such as you are, and all of the advantages and how much they can save by using a better product etc... You will sell the hell out of your stuff!

and, if you can get guy's to come in and get a cut... maybe have a guy day special or something... guy's get their hair cut at the same time as their wives, they get a free shave or something... but... everytime i've ever had a hair cut at one of those fancy barber shops with a women barber, I've always just bought everything they put in my hands.

I think yur going to do just fine...make sure to come back and let us know  your resuslts:)

The first thing my husband says when he comes home from the hair dresser is "When Tammy washes my hair I just about fall asleep and whatever shampoo she uses smells good".  We now buy the shampoo she uses. lol. Men, and we thought they never paid attention.

The basic information given ehre is to talk with your clients. Communicate effectively while you have them in your chair will be the key. Listen to them and guide them with your questions. What do they want to do with their hair? How do they like their hair to behave? How much time do they want to put towards thier grooming? What  will make it easier for them to do what they want?

How easy is it to manage the hair color? How often do they want  curly or straight hair?Do they change constantly? How much  is in their budget to  look nice? What kind of employment do they enjoy? How many children do they have? Become interested in the clients.

I go to a salon once every three weeks. What I find amazing the majority of those in their getting hair treatment have an engagement that day to attend.Great way to start the conversation is to find out where they are going.

I afree with Rich. Wwhen you get them in the chair ask them about themselves what they like, don't like and how you can serve them best. then you will know the course to follow.

Lori you would think so however that is why so many sales people lose sales or have a low closing rate don't you think? Bump to the front. I wish sales hq would do something about the sneaker spam crap.

We're just coming up to the end of the day in here in the UK and it's time when I look at emails etc

Had a team meeting this morning to go real heavy on the rapport and to stir the emotions of "luxury" and we did really well today. I've been totting up product sales per visitor and it's £1.20 higher per visitor than normal. Of course it could be just a one off but I'll keep you all posted!

Thanks for your support

Jenny

Thats a good start but I think you can do a lot better...

I don't know what your high dollar/profit  product is but explore other things you can sell or offer... a nice variety of "product" in price ranges form extreem to moderate, maybe even  high end salon accessories... sheers or grooming things... brushes, combs "whatevers"...

I bought a brush one time for a girl that was over $100.00. to me, it was just a wooden brush that cost a lot but to her it was like getting a new puppy!

Jenny if you have weekly meetings bring this up in every one of the meetings. It is one place that  can become complacent and forget to do the little things that adds to the sale.
