What is everyone doing to try and gain a footing on connecting to a hiring manager?

What I try to do is connect with a person whom can get me an introduction. I then try and schedule an informational interview. The purpose of this type is you are the interviewer and want to ask them questions about what they do, what are they doing different to survive the economy.

You dont want to go in talking about getting a job from them. People will shy away. I ask my questions and then give them the resume at the end. My last question, do you recommend someone I can speak with? The idea is a snowball effect as you network a specific company.  If you come in cool and calm, people willbe more open. There is a chance to that this person you just spoke with, will become a champion for you and hand deliver your resume to a hiring manager.
