Why is this rule so impotant in sales? In any industry, lets say a company has 10 Sales reps, Generally speaking 2 would be doing very good while the other 8 struggle. Why? The answer is simple. The top 2 have a PMA and the other 8 have an NMA. With a PMA you will do what needs to be done (whether you want to or not), hence:SUCCESS!

Do what the top producers do and YOU WILL be in the TOP 20%. Guaranteed!

PMA   I am not sure about that. Today is a great day. What does that get me or my client? It is a fantastic Friday . again what does this get me or my client? Is it a positive mental attitude about the company? About the job? About the task? About my spirituality?

Rich, as Zig says a PMA won't get you anything. But it will get you anything quicker than an NMA will. You see my friend, everything you see in your office, home or in life (lets say the computer on your desk, or the clock on your wall) started with someones THOUGHT!  If its a Positive THOUGHT  it wil create a Positive ATTITUDE.  From that will come a Positive ACTION.  Then if you do a Positive ACTION for lets say 30 days you develop Positive HABITS.

Now go back to the computer or clock. If marketed correctly you should recieve a PROFIT!  If thats a goal. So having a PMA WILL get you something. . All 20%s set GOALS. So do some of the 80%s. But the 80%s give up at the first sign of ADVERSITY.

Rich, without the Positive Mental Attitude, you may not approach the client in the right way, or maybe the customer service will be off, or perhaps you will just make a decision to not go to work at all today!  PMA affects every action we choose to take or not take!  PMA helps us decide whaat action to take, and how to take it!

Yes, even spiritually. I can have a bad attitude and even decide to not pray today, or choose not to believe.  Our attitude is how we will look at the world today, and how we will look at ourselves!

I should have remembered that with Zig Ziglar.  I asumed they were coming to work or wherever with only a positive mental attitude. Keeping in line with I want this and not following up with action to get what was wanted. Dream and you can get it .Dream only and it is a fantasy.

What a great topic!  You know how many times this philosophy has proved itself to be true!  Even here, in the forums, you can witness the 80/20 rule in action!  I can't think of a single thing where it has not been accurate!

You know, it's facinating the opportunites to learn we have here.  And, ironically, when I go to the forums, I can see the same people again and again.  What do you think?   many 20 percenters?  You'd be right!

It's the 20 percenters that study their profession, study successful people.  They are also the ones that contribute and help people like myslef learn!  Thank goodness!  And Mike, you can even take the next step and break the 20 down again to the next level, and I bet you will be able to see who falls in this group!

Yes. there is an 80/20 rule in the 80/20 formula!  And check out who those "top producers" are!

One thing we teach is to study successful people!  Why would you not!!!

(Thanks for motivating me to write a new article!  I'll put it on WIT once Ash gets the codes adjusted!  thanks again, GREAT topic. LYT!).

OH!  And how do I think the 80/20 rule applies in sales? Well, again, the top percenters study their profession, they study attitude and motivation.,  They also find ways to improve themselves in other areas.   20 percenters study and work on improving their skills, and in this case it would be sales or selling skills!, and things associated with them.     :)

Since starting this forum a few weeks ago I am now more than ever convinced that the 80/20 rule is still working. Several people have started forums and they almost all turn negative.

What is sad is that this is a site for sales people who when asked say that having a PMA is 90%+ of the game. Yet so many comments turn bad. There seems to be a group that stick together and nit pick and look for the BAD in what people say & do.

Just because someone has a lot of "points" does not mean they are an "expert" in handing out advice. It just means they have a lot of free time to respond to all of the different forums on this site.

Just because one has a lot of experience selling in one industry does not make one an expert in sales. If sales is all about having the right attitude, I would rather learn from someone who has a lot of experience in attitude. Sales is sales. Whether it's inside or O/S sales is sales. So, to me it's ALL about having the "RIGHT" attitude.

Why can't these forums stay on the subject matter? Probably because the neg reps want to show what they "think" they know. So, if they have negative thinking they are passing out negative advice.

It's obvious that 20% of us are looking to share advice and experiences. And it's even more evident that 80% of the respondents just don't get it. But as B. T. says. "that's OK without the 80%s. there would not be a 20%.

I imagine that I will be slammed for this comment and that's OK. I could probably even predict who will say what. That's because success is predictable and so is failure. Again as BT says "success is as predictable as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west."

For those of you just staring out in the "GREAT' profession of sales, be proud of what you do. Study your profession. Study as much as you can on ATTITUDE, the techniques will come. Look for the good in this site and the different forums. For those of us veterans who are positive thinkers, stay positive and pass on your good advice and look for the good in things. This site is not about "points.' It's about sharing and helping and THAT is what sales & life is all about.

These are my comments and my opinion and thank God we are all entitled to have one.

HAPPY SELLING, HAVE FUN! STUDY, STUDY, STUDY. (and when you are finished studying for the day, read one more chapter).

Not to be picky, but the correct term is "Pareto Principle", not "Poratio Principle".

Good point and on target. I prefer to look at the whole and not the semantics of how any defines one word of the total process.

Let us concentrate on the high percentages and not the low percentages or excpetions.

Rich, the 80/20 Rule as it applies to sales means: 20% of the reps get 80% of the results. Thats why mngt. focuses on the 20%. Thats where they get the results.

LOL getback.......... I was not referring to the 80-20. I was addressing the statement you made and I was referring to my statement above in my thread where some have allowed one word to affect the whole forum post... I know the Pareto rule. LOL I can understand the confusion.  Stay positive.

Being in the top 20% is a choice. It does take ACTION though but being in the 80% group is also a choice.

The good part of all of this is to study and just do what the pros did before us. People like Earl & Zig & Les Brown. They made the blue prints for all of us to follow. But it seems too many people are trying to reinvent the wheel.
