I found this humorous anecdote in a sales magazine... It was accompanied by a visual aid, but I'll let your imaginations draw the pictures.

Know Your Prospects:

A disappointed salesman of Coca Cola returns from his Middle East assignment.
A friend asked, "Why weren't you successful with the Arabs?"
The salesman explained, "When I got posted in the Middle East, I was very confident that I would make a good sales pitch as Cola is virtually unknown there. But, I had a problem. I didn't know to speak Arabic. So, I planned to convey the message through three posters placed one after another...

First poster: A man lying in the hot desert sand... totally exhausted and fainting.
Second poster: The man is drinking our Cola.
Third poster: Our man is now totally refreshed.

And then these posters were pasted all over the place

"Then how come it didn’t work?" asked the friend.
The salesman answered, “I didn't realize that Arabs read from right to left."

KNOW YOUR PROSPECTS!

Thanks for sharing this.  It does point out that we need to know who we are selling to.  The more information we have the better.

 this is so true.

i am naturally a funny guy, and i am good at evaluating potential client's sense of humor, so i feel comfortable using humor in my presentations on a regular basis.  but you definitely have to know the audience you are addressing for the pitch to be effective.

I heard another sales joke.

one guy says I am coming home no one wears shoes the second one calls in and says ship alot of shoes everyone needs them.

It is always great to gather information about the client and the culture.

When others ride along with me they are always asking why did you say that to the client. It is knowing your client and understanding the client.
