This is a good question. I have sold art during difficult times and I have always lost money on it.

If you cannot sit on the painting until the economy improves I would email its image to several reputable dealers found on the Internet and get their feedback on pricing, commissions and possible prospects. Based on that information I would determine to sell, hold or donate for a tax write-off. The fact is art doesn't sell for nearly what you bought it for unless the artist just popped recently.

Quite a few cities have art foundations that are non profit companies that show artists work. In sarasota it is called sarasota art center. That would be my first place to investigate.

How to sell pop art paintings?  Get active, get out, get going...

There are many 'art' sites on the web.  One is Etsy.com, to use Etsy you will need to have your images already made to send.  Other sites will do the printing for you like dotPhoto.com, deviantArt.com, & the afore mentioned artscad.com.  One common thread with these sites is they are community based so expect to spend sometime looking at other's works, responding to requests for critiques, and submitting articles, to contests, and feedback.

You have started your homework by asking questions here.  The next step is to continue asking questions:

What's the start up cost for the website

What's the website take on profit

What's the quality of work produced for the final image

Will the website keep track of sales, buyers, and taxes

How is the pay out handled

What's the reputation of the website & its hosting servers - aka you don't want to get blocked because the host also host to black listed sites.

Can the submitted work be submitted else where

What protection of copyright is available

This list of questions is not inclusive.  It's a list of things to consider. I hope it sparks more conversation with this topic & round your circle of influence.

PS It's only a bad economy if that's your perspective, for other's it's an  economy of opportunity.

In this economic time, people are holding onto their money a lot tighter and only spending on things they "think" is necessary. The key word here is "think". You can help persuade them to "think" they need your pop art.

How do you do that?

Start thinking about what benefit or solution your Pop Art gives or solves? Really dig deep. Go beyond the fact that it's enjoyable to look at or decorates a room really well.

It has been proven that a piece of art can change a person's mood and invoke strong emotional feelings. How can you use that as part of your sales story. If your Pop Art can invoke feelings of joy, what is that worth to your prospects. Find data to back your findings up.

"Science has proven that art can affect your mood. How much more could you accomplish today if you felt overjoyed and vibrant."

Build a compelling marketing message and then try to create scarcity. Only 5 paintings available. Art people love exclusivity, and scarcity is one of the biggest human drivers their is. No one wants to miss out. If you knew that there was only one can of Coke left in the world, wouldn't you want it a lot more.

So start building a compelling marketing message focused on benefits and solutions Pop Art gives to people.

Create a blog and give valuable information about art in general to your prospects.

Drive traffic to your blog through PPC or article marketing or social media, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter.

Team up with art galleries and other artists and show them how you can bring them customers.

Promote your Pop Art much like a Movie Studio promotes an upcoming movie.

Hope this helps.
