Poll: What do you think of spam??

97 percent of e-mail is spam. It's not only an annoyance but also an environmental problem.

How do you deal with spam? What do you think can be done to reduce it?

Does spam inhibit your ability to generate new business because e-mails are wrongly tagged as "junk"? How do you get past that?

How do you figure that it is an environmental problem??  At least these things are not coming by regular mail on paper anymore.  It is a pain to go through your junk email file to see if there is anything important but worth it to find the important emails we need.  Hotmail send you emails from time to time that you tell them if they are junk or not.  That seems to help get the emails to the correct box

I voted for it makes my job harder because as a marketing director, it's my job to make sure that our emails don''t get listed as SPAM.

I'm not sure if I understand the environment issue you mentioned unless you are also using the term SPAM to refer to direct mail, which obviously does involve paper.

As for making sure that our emails don't get blacklisted on the servers or through the email software we are using, there's a couple of things.  Those include:

  • obviously make sure that you are in compliance with CAN-SPAM (physical address, one step opt-outs)  (and yes, that means if someone opts out, that you don't ever email them again unless they re-register and ask to be added back)

  • do a double opt-in when people register to receive your emails

  • include a reminder at the top (or bottom) of your email with a statement, you are receiving this email because of (your relationship, past purchase, registration, etc.)

  • do not over send emails

  • make sure you target your lists and content appropriately

  • include your brand name both in the subject and from lines

  • make sure that people understand your privacy rules (do you sell or rent to third parties)

Some people as part of their double opt-in, follow with a welcome email which shows an example of what they can expect from you, as well as includes instructions for the person to whitelist you so that you don't get blocked by SPAM or corporate filters.

I couldn't get through on the link you provided but where does this 97% stat come from?  I'm not sure if I buy that figure since as a B2B marketer we routinely email info to our customers and prospects; our open and click rates exceed industry standards; and we very rarely ever get a SPAM attributed to us.  Our volume (number and frequency) is quite high.

On a personal note, I also sign up for lots of email newsletters, sales alerts etc.

yea, where did you get 97%? I get a lot of e mails since I have gone almost paperless. I am trying to go "green". I would guesstimate only 3% of my e mails are spam. And typically they are in the spam folder which I check often.

any emails I receive that are unwanted is spam even from companies I have no interest in connecting or having contact and they find a way around my spam protection.
