Quit with the "Hope" and "Change" Themes

Posted 8 months ago Calling all marketers: quit trying to capitalize on Obama with your cutesy "hope" and "change" marketing themes. First, not everyone voted for him and I, as one of the many millions of non-supporters, are turned off by anything to do with him -- including his empty word promises of hope and change Second, if you are selling me something, you damn well better not be HOPING that your product will work for me ... Third, using the "hope" and "change" theme just proves that you don't have anything more original or relevant to share about your product ...
Here's HOPING that I don't get any more of these themed direct mail pieces in my mailbox or I will have to CHANGE my address. |

| Posted 7 months ago I totally agree - the latest wave of advertising seems to imply we all lived " excessively " and we should feel guilty for creating local economic and global problems - what a truckload of fooey-hoo !!!! First, all of us here at this site are productive, creative people who worked hard for whatever rewards we have gotten in life. Go to a third-world country and see people standing around on the streets, in filthy run down shacks, doing virtually nothing and you'll see the results of living opposite the way Americans an d other Westerners live. Our economy would be a lot healthier if not for the criminal acts of a very small number of people who decided to trash free capitalism for personal gain / greed. Thes people need to be stripped of all their ill-gotten wealth, and made to do hard labor for the rest of their natural lives. Next - certain politicians decided that it was more important to serve their own political images than to do the right thing for our society. They forced banks to approve totall unqualified mortgage applicants in order to make home ownership " fair and attainable. " They planted the seeds which became economic timebombs that caused our banking system to crumble when the mortgages defaulted. These politico-morons need to be thrown out of office and prevented from doing any more social engineering ever again. " Hope " - to me - is barely a notch above " wishing." Nothing happens without thought AND action. " I HOPE we win Lotto this week ..... " - " I HOPE it doesn't rain Saturday." - " I HOPE the traffic on the Interstate isn't too heavy." Yup - all these are expressions of HOPE - the problem is, hope alone doesn't change anything. You might as well plan out your future by snapping wishbones and wishig up a star. " Change " is another great buzzword. " Change " can mean deterioration too. I prefer " Improvement " instead. I think everyone with half a brain realizes that society is always in a state of change. Some people don't adjust or keep up at times. But as society improves, everyone's lot improves. " A rising tide raises all ships " - as the saying goes. It's true - if I had to live as a poor person, I'd rather be poor in the US ( or the West) rather than most places on this planet. Our poor still have access to public schools and libraries, often have cell phones, access to some level of medical care - people on welfare in this country even have air-conditioning and TV's. No, it's not easy - and it's not pretty - but we don't live in a caste system like people in India - you CAN work your way out. The keyword is WORK, not hope. The other keyword is IMPROVE, not change. So advertisers, most Americans haven't thrown in the towel and given up. We still want to earn well, to buythe things in the marketplace to give us security, comfort, and pleasure. We want to enjoy the fruits of our labor, and keep as much of it as possible. We are a generous people, and we give - but we choose to give as we want to give, not to have the fruits of our productivity taken away and redistributed by others. So don't lay this guilt trip on all of us, like we somehow were irrresponsible - when we bought the products and services you offered and marketed to us since we came out of the last recession. We're just not buying it.

| Posted about 1 month ago This article really hits home! I read an article a while back about a kid who wanted to divide the country in half, and get all the gun toting greedy corporate executives on one side, and all the Michael Moore liberals on the other. It just reminds me of that. If i could find the article i would post it.... |
